SYDNEY HARBOUR
Sydney Harbour, a section of the larger Port Jackson, is divided into three main parts: North Harbour, Middle Harbour, and Sydney Harbour. Port Jackson extends westward from the entrance at Sydney Heads, covering Sydney, Darling Harbours, and the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers. The harbour’s southern bays are wide and rounded with lovely beaches and coves, while the northern side’s inlets are narrower, creating a stunningly diverse landscape.
Originally a river valley, Port Jackson stretches 19 km, covers 55 km², and has a shoreline spanning 317 km, making it the largest natural harbour in the world. It’s bustling with yacht traffic and home to several islands, including Fort Denison, Goat Island, Shark Island, and Rodd Island, each adding character to this impressive harbour.
There are many ways to enjoy Sydney Harbour—from Sydney Tower, the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, Dr Mary Booth Reserve, and the Royal Botanic Gardens. But nothing beats experiencing the harbour from the water itself. Yacht tours are a highlight of my travels, and this one in Sydney is a must-do! If a yacht tour isn’t within budget, hop on a water taxi with an Opal card for a fresh view of the harbour.
Most yacht tours set off from Circular Quay, the central hub for all major harbour transport. This spot, nestled between the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, is also where large cruises like Royal Caribbean dock. Our tour was operated by Captain Cook Cruises, taking us eastward toward the Heads and offering views of both the city and the vast expanse of the Tasman Sea.
The 90-minute yacht tour gave us glimpses of waterfront residences with multi-million-dollar price tags—though many coves remain accessible to the public thanks to government rules. From nature reserves to scenic coves, there’s plenty to explore without a price tag.
This tour also took us westward for views of Darling Harbour on the opposite side of the bridge. If you’re looking to see Sydney from a unique angle, I highly recommend a harbour tour. For a budget-friendly option without the crowds of public transport, check out shared harbour tour services like the one I used below. Cheers, mates!
